Do you love being outdoors, care about healthy waterways, and enjoy hands-on science? We’re looking for new volunteers to join our Waterwatch volunteer team!
What’s involved?
As a Waterwatch volunteer, you’ll be assigned a monitoring site and carry out monthly water quality testing. Each session takes about an hour and includes seven simple tests:
- temperature
- dissolved oxygen
- phosphates
- nitrates
- pH
- turbidity
- electrical conductivity
We’ll provide you with full training, a kit, and a testing pole — so you’ll be ready to get started with confidence.
Why it matters
The data collected by volunteers across Ginninderra/Yass, Molonglo, Southern ACT and Cooma catchments feeds into the Catchment Health Indicator Program (CHIP) Report. This is the only report of its kind in our region and provides a vital overview of waterway health, identifying issues and helping inform ACT Government policy decisions. In other words, your contribution really counts!
The perks
- Spend time outdoors and enjoy the peace of nature.
- Contribute as a citizen scientist to an important regional project.
- Get involved in special surveys such as waterbugs, platypus (August), and frogs (October).
- Join a vibrant community of people who care about conservation.
