About Us:
A relatively young member group, the Macgregor Landcare Group [MLG] was established in 2001, as a result of a Neighborhood Futures Project implemented by the ACT Planning and Land Authority. The group’s membership has dropped off over the years and its regular volunteers are now struggling to implement new projects and maintain existing ones. The MLG is currently looking to attract new members who are able to invest as little as one hour a month to look at ways to improve the quality and biodiversity of Ginninderra Creek and its surrounds in Macgregor.
Over the years members of the group have undertaken significant plantings of native trees, shrubs and grasses in plots bordering the creek with the aim of establishing a food and shelter corridor for local wildlife. Macgregor volunteers collaborate closely with volunteers from nearby Dunlop and Umbagong Park and many other Landcare and Parkcare groups who are all working to achieve, among other things, an urban wildlife sanctuary within the Ginninderra Creek catchment.
MLG organises a Clean Up Australia Day site for Macgregor residents each year to help combat the ongoing problem of litter and rubbish that regularly washes down the stormwater system. While dumping has not been identified as a major problem, shopping trolleys are regularly dragged out of the creek. Anyone interested in participating in this activity can register on the Clean Up Australia Day website [just key in Macgregor] or turn up on the day at the site which is always at the swing bridge at the bottom of Swift Pl.
The Group has worked with the Macgregor Primary School, planting a tree for each year group on the school grounds in 2002 and would like to continue this association. Other ongoing native regeneration sites include the park behind the Kings Swim School, the playground at Berne Ct, the billabong below Crago Place and Mount Goodwin.
The Macgregor Landcare Group, through its association with the Ginninderra Catchment Group, is also involved in government consultation processes regarding neighbourhood development proposals and other planning issues. It also provides input to the ACT Government regarding services such as mowing and weed control contracts to minimise conflict with Landcare objectives.
